Check the T&Cs before you hire a car. Ask these questions in particular:

• Do I have to take a shuttle from the airport to my rental car? Rentals off-airport are usually cheaper. This is great until you arrive with luggage, tired kids, and a late flight. It is usually easier to rent from a company that has an office on site.
• Are there age-related surcharges on car rentals? Some restrictions or fees may apply to those aged under 25 and over 70. Research shows that these fees and restrictions are not always made clear at the time of booking.
• What is the fuel policy at your company?
• Is mileage limited? Some companies limit the number of miles you can drive per day. You’ll be charged a steep surcharge if you drive more than a certain number of miles per day.
• Will I have to pay extra if I add a driver? Consider this when selecting a provider. If you book in advance, you’ll be charged around £75 for each extra driver per week. You may pay more if it’s not mentioned until you arrive at the desk.

When you book

Pay up front with a credit card when you book early.

If you are travelling in peak times, you should book your car rental as soon as you have booked your holiday. There will be more choices and, in most cases, better prices. Book with a broker or provider that allows free cancellation. You can then cancel your booking and rebook it at a lower rate if the price drops.

All purchases above £100 will be protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. You can use this method to get reimbursed if the rental is not up to standard. Research shows that paying upfront when booking is usually cheaper than paying at the location on arrival.
