Where Pizza Comes From
Pizza as we know it owes its origins to the city of Naples. The Margherita Legend
A popular legend about the invention of pizza is linked to the Margherita. The story goes that a local pizza maker, or pizzaiolo to give them the proper term, was asked to make a pizza in honour of the visiting Queen Margherita in 1889. Using basil, mozzarella and tomato, the Margherita was born, its ingredients matching the colours of the Italian flag.
