How to look after your trailer.

Just like your car, a trailer needs regular attention. We often spend plenty of time and money maintaining our cars, checking tyre tread and pressure, but the tyres and structure of a trailer deserve the same care. A damaged trailer could cause a serious accident.

Check the Tyres

Make time every month to check that your trailer is in good condition. Start with the tyres, making sure they are inflated to the correct pressure for the load you are carrying and that the tread and sidewalls are in good condition.

Check the Structure

Next, check that the trailer is still structurally sound. Investigate any cracks or rust, especially on the floor and chassis, as the last thing you want is for the floor of the trailer to give way on the road.

Check the Tailgate

Pay close attention to the tailgate at the back. You should be able to lock it securely when on the road. If it were to fail, the contents of the trailer could spill out and the tailgate itself could damage other road users.

Check the Coupling and Lights

Finally, take the time to check that the towbar coupling is clean and free from rust, and that the trailer’s lights and electrical connection are working. The connection between the trailer and your vehicle is probably the most important part to check. If you find any problems, look for Trailer Parts at Auto and Trailer.
