How to care for your knitted items

If you are a keen knitter, you’ll probably find that you have more than a few projects on the go at the same time. There is a new baby on the way somewhere that needs a hat, booties and an all-in-one. A stuffed bear for Christmas is always a popular choice, or maybe you’re making a jumper or a beanie hat for someone. Maybe you’re more of a one-project-at-a-time kind of person who can’t start something new until the last one is finished. Either way, your creations need a fair bit of care, and there are several ways that you can do that. Once you’ve got the knack for it, and the bug, you’ll soon need a place to store all of your creations.

Storage Boxes

Firstly, invest in some decent-sized plastic storage boxes. These are available from a variety of outlets. You might find that you specialise in one type of project over another; however, many knitters find that the sheer variety of what they can make is half the fun.

Fold, Don’t Hang

You might think lots of hangers are the answer, but heavy knitwear can stretch out of shape on a hanger, so it is usually best to fold jumpers and store them flat. If you’re the productive type and are churning out jumpers and hats at incredible speed, you may even want to set aside a wardrobe or cupboard especially for storing them all.

Hats

Beanies and bobble hats are a great way of keeping the cold out. However, getting the size of a hat right is a tricky business. If it’s too small it won’t cover the forehead, and if it’s too big the wearer will have to roll it up so much it will look ridiculous. You could invest in some wooden hat storage and measurement “mushrooms”, or even a polystyrene head such as the ones used for headphones, to give you an idea of the dimensions needed.

Show Them Off

The skill and love that you pour into your creations deserve the same love and attention when it comes to storing them. Most of all, make sure you get good use out of the things that you make. Be proud and show them off. It’s a great buzz when someone compliments something you’ve made, or asks where you got it, and you can answer “I made it myself”.
