A Global First: Staffordshire’s Zero Carbon Sewerage Plans

A site near the town of Barlaston in North Staffordshire is about to be the home of the world’s first carbon-neutral wastewater treatment plant.

There is already a water sewage works at the Strongford site, which is due to be completely redeveloped to accommodate the new facility. The new treatment plant will include a number of advances in technologies, which will reduce the plant’s carbon footprint to zero.

Water Treatment Without the Carbon Footprint

It is hoped that the new Strongford site, which is anticipated to cost somewhere in the region of £40 million, will be a world leader in saving and reusing water. It is also hoped that Strongford will be able to inspire and support other plants around the world by sharing the blueprint for the site as well as sharing the results of the new technologies with colleagues across the globe.

The building of the new plant also bears the added bonus of many jobs being created for the local area.

An Innovative Approach

The site has been partly funded by the Water Breakthrough Challenge scheme run by Ofwat. According to Ofwat, this prize money was available to entrants who could demonstrate particularly innovative techniques in improving water treatment facilities and reducing carbon footprints.
