How to Make Your Desk Healthier

Those of us who spend a lot of time sitting at a desk will have felt the pain in our shoulders when we’ve spent hours poring over a spreadsheet or other document without any break. There are a number of things we can do to help.

The Right Chair

At the very least, make sure your chair is set to the right height for you: your feet should be comfortably on the floor when you sit, your elbows should be at a right angle when you rest your arms on your desk and the back of the chair should give you support. You could try getting professional advice if you are unsure. If you are based in Wales, you could try using occupational health Cardiff – a good place to look.

Wash and Brush Up

The truth is that most of us do not do what we were taught as children when it comes to hygiene. We do not wash our hands before meals, when we get indoors and after using the lavatory. Particularly when we hot-desk, this covers our desks in a whole range of nasties. Wash your hands frequently (keep anti-bac gel cleaner handy) and use anti-bac wipes to clean your equipment. All of it. Often.

Move It, Move It

The prescribed wisdom is that humans should move every hour – preferably every half an hour. At the very least, go for a walk in your lunch break. Remember that all of you based in Wales can get advice from occupational health Cardiff. There are several companies to choose from.

DSE

Ideally, our eyes should be level with the top of our screens, our wrists should be supported when we use our keyboards and we should not over-reach when at our desks. The Health and Safety Executive provides useful information on this.

Exercise

There are plenty of exercises we can do at our desks to help relieve the tension that accrues in our necks and shoulders. Sure, you can find some online, but to be really sure you are getting the message across, why not consider getting in specialist advice from occupational health Cardiff?

Follow the above tips, drink plenty of water so you stay hydrated, spritz your face regularly and you will start to have a healthier desk.
