Perfect Packing Tips

If you’re preparing to move house, you might be putting off the packing. Where do you start? Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be the kind of experience that leaves you ‘tearing your hair out’ if you know what you are doing. Here are some top tips on how to pack like a boss:

Clear Out

One of the best first steps when you decide to move to a new home is to use it as the perfect opportunity to have a great decluttering exercise. We all have clothes, toys or items that have not seen the light of day for years. If you haven’t used or worn something for over a year, donate items to a local charity or post ads on popular online second-hand selling sites for items that are still in good condition. Why waste time and box space by packing things that you never use?

Stock Up

Essential packing materials include a good mix of differently sized cardboard boxes and some of the more heavy-duty boxes too. Other must-have items include tape, stretch and bubble wrap and labels.

Begin Early

Packing is a task that always takes longer than you expect, so get a head start and pack goods that are not needed often into boxes nice and early. A general guideline for a large house is one box a day will take about two months. The first items you could pack include are seasonal items, summer-use items (when moving in the winter) or jumpers and coats (if you move in the summer), etc.

One Room at a Time

Going through the house one room at a time makes it easier for you to stay organized and to mark the contents of each box as you go. This will make the process of unpacking easier too, if you have numbered or named boxes for each room of the house. When unpacking, you’ll be able to put your hand straight on everything you need, without flinging items out of boxes in despair!

Don’t Overfill

If you are short of boxes, then you may be tempted to overfill boxes as you pack. However, this is not a good idea as it can cause injury to you or the removals staff. There’s also the risk of destroying your priceless Ming vase if the bottom of the box falls out! Boxes should still be easily liftable with no strain and gaps between packed items cushioned with old paper or cloth to prevent damage in transit.

Essentials Box

Remember to pack an ‘essentials’ box or ‘First Night’ box so you can have everything you need right away so you do not have to go digging for it. This can include things such as meals or snacks, toiletries, medicines, pet food, towels and tool kits, for example.
