Why we still use timber today along with modern materials.

Although it is rare to see a house completely constructed from Timber in the modern age it is not unheard of. We still use elements of timber in our modern homes today with floorboards and the roof frame. Why should we consider continuing to use timber over modern material such as plastic? As Southampton Timber Merchants http://www.timbco.co.uk/ will tell you, it is still the original and the best for many construction projects.

  1. It is biodegradable. Unlike plastic, when it is finished with wood will rot providing habitats for insects and animals plus nutrients to new trees.
  2. It insulates a property better than concrete. Wood does not transfer heat as much as metal. Trees are used in an urban environment to reduce heat sink.
  3. Timber wears just as well as brick if it is treated properly. The environment it is placed in is also a factor.

  1. In Europe, the timber industry plants and develops more trees than they use to ensure it is sustainable.
  2. However, it does take decades for a tree to reach full maturity.
  3. Despite being a softwood, Pine is used a huge amount in construction and in furniture making. The reason is that Pine is denser than many hardwoods. The term softwood and hardwood refers to the tree’s leaves, (hardwood trees have broad leaves) and whether they are deciduous or evergreen.
